Make a joyful noise to the God of our salvation! -- Psalm 95

The words of Psalm 95 form the theme and focus for our new Children's Music Ministry, "Make a joyful noise to the God of our salvation!" This new and comprehensive ministry for all children of our congregation and community kicked off on August 20th! Below are the answers to some common questions:

What do we do? Above all, we have fun and learn to serve God and our church by using and developing the musical gifts God has given each of us. Underneath all of that, we'll sing and ring, learn, move, pray, and, eventually, play as we add Orff and other instruments.

Who's it for? Children ages 3 through Grade 5. Three-year-olds may enter on their birthdays.

When will we meet? Sunday evenings. There are several adult Bible studies and small groups that meet on Sunday nights. The kids' choirs begin rehearsals at 6:00 with graded dismissal times - either to parents or to the nursery.

How are the kids grouped? We'll start with five graded choirs. They are:

  • The Cherub Choir - Vocal and Crystal Bells (ages 3 to 4 1/2)
  • The Angel Choir - Vocal and Crystal Bells (ages 4 1/2 to kindergarten)
  • The Chapel Choir - Vocal and Handchimes (grades 1 and 2)
  • The Wesley Singers - Vocal (grades 3-5)
  • The Carillon Ringers - Handbells (grades 3-5) Note: This choir will meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:00-6:00.
What kind of curriculum is being used? Lewis Worthington is designing the graded curriculum for each of these ensembles based upon national standards develooped by Choristers Guild and the Royal School of Church Music in America. Each of these organizations emphasizes music education. Alternately, they work to foster a sense of leadership and responsibility to the local church and mentorship of younger choristers by older children.

Why is this important? Aside from the documented benefits of music education, participation in a church children's choir is one of the first ways in which our kids serve in worship. They take on the vital role of worship leader.

Wait a minute - are you asking for a commitment? Well, yes - from both parents and kids.

Do you need help to make it all happen? Yes.

Do I have to have children in the choirs to help out? No.

Wait! Don't go. I still have questions! That's fine. Give Lewis a call anytime at 972-355-2711.
