Serving Meals at Denton Salvation Army

The Salvation Army

FMUMC is pleased to partner with The Salvation Army to provide meals for those less fortunate in Denton County. Please consider assisting us. You can deliver and serve food at the Salvation Army facility in Denton (1508 E McKinney, Denton, TX 76209-4526). If you fear cooking, don't worry; that isn't required. We provide Capriccio’s pastas, Starbucks breads and sweets, Great Harvest breads, Chick Fil A sandwiches, and Long John Silver’s chicken, shrimp, and hush puppies. We also bring salad and tea.

"The experience is certainly meaningful for the people that are served. And they are so gentle and gracious. The amazing thing is that most everyone that takes time out to support this important ministry is touched even more than the folks that are served."

-- Dave Cotten

We're scheduled to serve on Saturdays. Typically, providing this service takes about four hours from the time you arrive at the church until you return to Flower Mound. Volunteers pick up the food from the church around 3:30 and head up to Denton to handle two dinner seatings: one at 6 p.m. (a small group of up to 25 of the Salvation Army’s current residents) and another at 6:30 p.m. (where typically there are 20 to 50 people to serve). Upon your arrival, Nesbit Johnson will guide you in the kitchen as you: 1. Make coffee (supplies are on the island), ice water and juice or tea. 2. Turn on the oven and steam table. 3. Heat up frozen food from Long John Silver’s and Capriccio’s. 4. Put out the salad, tea, dessert and breads. 5. Set the table with plastic table cloths, salt and pepper, and condiments.

Three additional notes: 1. If you or other team members prefer to serve on a weeknight, we can discuss that with our volunteer coordinator (Ann Pace). 2. No one under 18 can be in the kitchen, but kids can help serve in the dining room. 3. Feel free to bring balloons and decorations for four tables on holidays or special occasions.

Please contact Nancy Mullins via e-mail or call her at (972) 897-852 if you have questions or would like to serve meals at the Salvation Army.
