Discipleship Has Its Privileges

Posted Tuesday, September 23, 2008

It’s time for our fall discipleship campaign! Discipleship? Don’t you mean stewardship? Well, not exactly. From Sunday, October 5th through Sunday, November 16th, we as a congregation will examine those promises we make when we join the church. Those promises - to support the church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness - are the keys that unlock the doors to a meaningful, joyful, and faithful Christian life. Too often we see them in the narrow perspective of stewardship, or what we “have to do” for the church. In reality, though, the promises we make to God are really promises God offers to us. They are privileges, not obligations. They are “I get to’s,” not “I’ve got to’s”.

What do you need from me? First, be present at the all the worship and fellowship events listed below where we will begin using those keys to open the doors of discipleship. Second, think about the ways in which you have experienced the privilege of prayer or of worship or of giving of yourself. How has God reached back as you reached out for God? Third, start sharing those experiences with those you know and love. Let’s start telling the story of how God has blessed us through our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. We will begin collecting these God Moments so that we can share them in various ways to build up and encourage the Church. If you have friends who want to know more about the blessings of being a disciple, tell them and invite them to come along!

God has big plans for Flower Mound United Methodist and for you, so please join us as we examine how to more fruitfully and faithfully live out the Privileges of Discipleship.
